I have to add this: I wonder if you realize just how much courage it takes to put work that is this emotionally honest in public view...or the healing effect it has on those who are fortunate enough to see it? Carla, your willingness to be so open, so vulnerable, is a testament to your inner strength. The challenges you portray, the emotions, are universal ones in my experience. In viewing your work, one has the opportunity to confront and heal within themselves all of those quintessential human frailties through the process of self recognition and surrender. I hope that know and honor yourself for this gift you give to others. There should be great peace and joy in that.

Carla, this is yet another of your AMAZING drawings although it has the quality of a painting to me. You asked for what we see and think when viewing this image? I think perhaps what we feel might trump anything we think in this case. I feel a sense of communion with this woman...and hope. I see a woman who has experienced life to a great degree as oppressive, painful and difficult, who has hit bottom. She has surrendered, but strangely, has not given up. She is gazing outward with one hand forward, but not completely open. It feels to me like she is trying to reach out for connection and help, but exhaustion and her own doubt holds her back. Her head looks slightly lifted to me, as if she is attempting to get up, or maybe she is merely waiting, gathering her will and energy after what must have been a painful surrender. There is also a sense of great strength in her face. In her eyes I see a woman that has confronted the torment of her own perceived insanity and come through it to wisdom. It's as if she is gazing outward, but looking inward at the same time. There is peace in facing the truth within ourselves...and that recognition, facing the shadow so to speak, gives birth to new strength...and change. In this image, because of the placement of lights and darks (the horizon line) it almost seems like she is still trapped in a coffin-like state, but the light streaming down from the heavens tells the next part of her story, and she herself is illuminated. She is the phoenix about to rise from the ashes of her past. I see the life and light giving rays in the sky behind her reflected in her hair...to me a symbol of Spirit, and slowly yet surely, infusing her with energy and new life. Thank you Carla, for touching my heart and soul so deeply.
